Globalization and the Public Cartographies of Vietnam Idol
This article I found it interesting
how it was relating it to the American version of “American Idol” from Vietnam idol
the concept of the show is similar as in there is people performing but rather
it was to expand Vietnamese identities and recognition for those who win. It offers a sense of unity to the Vietnamese people
and allows for an opportunity to represent the country, as spoken in the
article “winners receive a recording deal, money, and the crown title of “idol”
for their countries” (pg. 888). When I first read that it gave me an impression
as if by winning these people will earn power and recognition from the people
outside of their country. It is almost like an identity they are earning. As the
article states it is a “nation building project and is seen as a matter
furthering culture democracy”. This quote reminded me of the lesson on
neoliberalism because it signifies the start of a new freedom. Freedom as in
the freedom to express the culture’s beliefs and also gain recognition to what
people in Vietnam value. This article also spoke about the industrializing of
the economy which is allowing for the idol to come to popularity. I thought
overall this article was refreshing to read because it allows me to see
different perspectives of people participating in Vietnam idol, its not just
about getting a reward, the biggest thing is earning recognition for the
country.
