The film was about a South Asian couple
who had a pregnancy. Kelly graduated from high school and wants to pursue a
college education but the pregnancy added another complication to her life. She
was engaged to Tony after the baby by the parents. Kelly has big hopes for her
future to be successful. But, Tony has a criminal history and doesn’t like
school. He just works and picks up the other siblings from school. Tony’s
history could cause him to get deported but he keeps it a secret from Kelly. I
think the film shows how the situation is very complicated because it involves
aspects of immigration, teen pregnancy, South Asian culture, and education. All
of these ideas make the environment a lot more complicated but it shows that
these aspects are intertwined with each other and create this life for Kelly
and Tony. The deportation issue from Tony creates some stress in immigration.
The pregnancy puts more responsibility on Kelly and Tony and forces them to put
more time into the baby. The South Asian culture shows in how the parents
organize the marriage and it shows their lifestyle in the film. The value of
education gives the situation a more dynamic feel for Kelly and Tony because
Kelly sees it as a good future but Tony sees it as a waste of time. They all
contribute to the mood of the film.
This
article talks about being a queer South Asian and using the internet as a
resource. It’s hard to be part of the LGBT group and the South Asian group
because it’s like a double minority group. It talks about using the internet as
a source to express your thoughts in the community. However, people on the
internet might not be real because of all of the trolls online and the easy
access to everyone. It is a good place to communicate and organize events in
real life, but it shouldn’t be used as the movement for a minority group. It
creates the image that the LGBT has no visible face in the community. It’s hard
to have the confidence to come out into the community and express your views
when part of a minority group. The internet seems so much more convenient
because there is not much risk of being judged online because no one will know
you or recognize you. You can create and find communities with other people
that can relate to create a movement but if it’s always just online, the
movement will be weaker.
