Merchants of Cool Documentary
This documentary discusses how teens are the major influencers on the economy
due to their large presence as consumers because they buy material goods more
frequently. Teens tend to buy what is trendy on the market but trends change over
time. Professionals observe teens to try and predict the next biggest social trend.
In the article about import culture, the popular trend in that time was cool cars
with many gadgets. This trend has proven to change over time whereas now a days
cars are still cool but not as popular as the desire of teens to spend large amounts
of moneys on tickets to concerts and festivals which they show off on their social
media. The documentary also mentions the TV teen sensation MTV. I believe
MTV is still very popular today with their reality tv shows like Catfish, The
Challenge, and more. The commercials shown on MTV today display catchy
promotions for their shows that intrigue teens’ interests and products that teens
would be interested in purchasing. MTV also puts on its own award show which is
a popular watch among teens so they can see their favorite artists perform and watch
celebrities walk the red carpet. Personally, I love watching MTV. The documentary
shows the dynamic of MTV to be about mostly music back in the day. I believe this
part of MTV has changed and their structure is mainly drama shows due to teens
increasingly enjoying drama shows. The documentary also mentions South Park
which is still popular today but I believe South Park today mentions more stereotypes
and recent trending topics in their show in very satire ways. Wrestling is shown to be
extremely popular in that time period but I believe sports like basketball and football
are able to remain popular today due to teens being able to participate in the sport in a
community or school team and wrestling in a school team is not like wrestling on TV.
Trends and popular culture will keep continuing to change with the new generations
of teens.
