“Family, Culture, Gender: Narratives of Ethnic
Reconstruction”
This article was yet again another
interesting one, this time it brings into the perspective of all the different Asian
groups, not just Laotians. There were Chinese and also Vietnamese communities. In
the content of this article it speaks of how Laotian communities are
underrepresented in the Asian community. This reminds me of the struggles I still
see my parents go through at the moment, the Asian community is so big yet it
is also a long term commitment to bring attention to the public of the awareness
that people in the community are being treated unfairly. An example I can give
is shopping most people would realize nowadays that without knowing English it
is practically impossible to get around in this society, however for those that
do not have the time to learn and struggle to communicate in lets say shopping,
its when workers don’t treat those people fairly just because they don’t speak English.
Another noted point brought up in this article was the perspectives between immigrant
parents and their children growing up in the united states. The influences that
the child get from being in America and how that differs from the culture that
their parents perceive for it to be.
“Edward Said, Orientalism”
In the film Said mentions the
different issues that is still faced by Asian Americans that is relating to
orientalist. The history of colonization and continuity of immigration that has
not ended. Orientalism in a sense gives a fake perception of what is seen to be
good or bad, because out society in America lives in power of the rich and
authoritative if they are to put words that lead to bad thoughts of the culture
it could happen because after all there is very little say the minority groups
can do.
