Neoliberalism Video Clip:
The video clip discusses that neoliberalism is basically the capitalist notion that emphasizes on the privilege. In other words, neoliberalism focuses on that welfare should be eroded and treated as a privileged good. Under a neoliberalist society, the free market loses its ties to democratic ideals and there a sense of conformity to the dominant mainstream and privileged. The video clip also mentions how neoliberalism affects society and is applicable to our lives. Many privileged and private individuals construct public school systems and this hierarchy in society. With individuals living under a neoliberalist society, many underrepresented communities will continue to be silenced and oppressed. Many individuals are not able to see the world through different perspectives and believe that the world is structured around hierarchy and domination. In the end, many individuals living in a neoliberalist society are so embedded in a dominant mainstream environment and fear to be opened to new perspectives as traditional norms will continue to thrive.
Globalization and the Public Cartographies of Vietnam Idol
In “Globalization and the Public Cartographies of Vietnam Idol” Bui discusses that Vietnam has been taking part in globalization through popular culture recognizes that cultures are changing over time and globalization through Asian cultures (887). Vietnamese Idol is globalized, expansion of contemporary popular culture, and most importantly creates the mass culture among the youth. Through globalization with Vietnam Idol, this focuses on the younger generation and looks at the validity of whether or not globalization is power and driven by Western power and influence. As Stuart Hall suggest that “cultures are changing over time,” therefore there is a mixture of culture and hybridity while cultural differences in order to globalize cultures, Vietnam Idol fuses cultures as “contestants sing songs running the gamut from Korean ballads to US rock and hip hop to Vietnamese music showing a range of music and there is American influence toward the creation of Vietnam Idol"(895). Even though Vietnam Idol may represent as a cultural production among the Vietnamese population, the auditions are in Vietnam and which may make it difficult for Vietnamese diasporic communities to be able to return to Vietnam to experience the auditions. Even though transnationalism has allowed the Vietnamese diasporic communities connect to Vietnam and realize there is a global expansion, it is difficult to see the cultural authenticity within the Vietnamese community due to culture changing over time and Vietnamese diasporic community assimilating to American society.
