In The Gendered Limits of Consumer Citizenship in Import Subculture, Rodriguez talked about the marginality of Asian Americans in cinematic representation, as well as hollywood's idea of multiculturalism. Prior to reading this paper, I never interpreted The Fast and the Furious in the author's point of view. I agree it is an issue because they script character roles and attributes because on the actor's ethnicity. Another interesting point is the use of import cars from Japan in the movie in order to appeal to the audience which ultimately shapes the identifications of Asian capitals and makes claims to cultural citizenship. This is because cars in America play a big role in the formation and identity of the country's identity. Therefore, the “import cars” show a representation of other countries economic where Americans negotiate Japan's citizenry and culture. The introduction of such nice and sleek import cars also posed a threat to American masculinity where some people viewed as a Japanese “invasion”.
