Journal #9: Indio-Chic and the Dogmas of the West
The main idea for both articles is that they talk about how cultures see each other and which is more superior than the other. For the article “Arabs, Islam, and the Dogmas of the West” Edward talks about how western civilization is more mature than oriental civilization but I disagree with this. Although the economy of America is better than that of oriental civilization our education systems focus on very different things. In the West the education system focuses more on creativity and innovation that encourages students to think outside the box and for themselves. In oriental civilization they focus more on repetition and being able to stay focused for large periods of time. For this reason the biggest companies in the world are usually run by people who were educated in America and is why most asian people work as engineers and code for big companies. Therefore neither is necessarily better than the other but they are simply different. The article “Indo-Chic: Late Capitalist Orientalism and Imperial Culture” is related as Sunaina writes about how Asians are taking over jobs in the West. However they also talk about the cultural fascinations but that is simply because most Asian women are seen marrying other asians so they’re therefore seen as more difficult to obtain so are better trophy wives. Because of how outlandish Asian culture is westernization of it makes it more easy to understand and accessible in the west.
