Assimilation

This reading had a lot of short stories that depict the struggles that immigrants face each day. The biggest mentioned struggle was the struggle to feel belonging somewhere and this concept came a long way in the sense that it was mentioned a lot in the article because there were instances where people would be told to go back to their “hometown” and this is a huge deal especially with new immigrants. Even for me as an Asian American I sometimes ask myself who I am because yes I was born here but do I know everything about this culture. my parents raised me in a very Chinese traditional based household and so by far all my morals and values stemmed off of there and it has so been this case. There were so many instances that I wish I would know more and actually blend in and adapt to this culture as of white people would. This concept of fitting in and adapting well to the culture was touched upon multiple times in the article.
Heterogeneity, hybridity, multiplicity: Asian differences

The first poem talks about breaking generation and the author uses her example to show her Japanese heritage. Her daughters action was not what was perceived to be in their tradition yet she still did it.  I think this has a lot to do with the growing traditions and the way we view things differently. So many people live in this world and each person thinks differently I really liked how this article narrates just that because it means that they acknowledge the growing population’s point of view changing.  For example putting elders in positions inferior to younger people is not the tradition of the Japanese nor Asian culture but this was showcased in the article.
