Learning
about the network of queer Asia was interesting especially because many members
of my own family belong to the homosexual Southeast Asian category. For
example, my cousin Alan is gay and has a boyfriend Willy; however, it took a
long time for my grandparents to regard Willy as Alan’s romantic partner. In
the traditional Vietnamese communities my grandparents are accustomed to, queer
people are not as open about their sexuality as illustrated by the reading’s
search engine findings and Roy's term "double minority." Furthermore, the reading talks about how there is a social movement to help members of queer minority communities access the internet in order to connect to fellow queer Asians. It was interesting to read about queer Asia, since most of these derive from cultures that are gender discriminating as well. The reading enlightened me by giving me a perspective on Asian society organized more through sexuality rather than race or gender.
