The Gendered Limits of Consumer Citizenship Response
The article discusses the effects of the "rice racer" culture that comes out of the glamorization and fixing of Japanese cars, a system made popular by the Fast and Furious movies. The issue with this perpetuation is that it creates a highly masculine culture in America that is derived from Japanese products. These expectations come back to hurt many Asian men's abilities to act as their true selves. The male culture that exists in most societies create a set of guidelines for men, Asian men in particular becoming victims of this sexist doctrine. Because many do not share the same looks as those that are commonly depicted as the figure for ultra-masculine men, the label of "feminine" or "weak" are often placed onto them by society. The media does nothing to take away this culture, any male Asian roles usually seen as very wimpy or extremely masculine (fighting movies, Fast and Furious). The depth and diversity that is strived for in white male characters and actors is not given to Asians. White people in films are often given roles that are unique and complicated, but Asian are subjugated to the boxes that society and masculine culture has placed them in/
