Journal #15: Shopping for Pleasure

When I was growing up, I used to watch movies and shows where the main female protagonist always got rid of their stress by going on shopping sprees. Another case of this stereotype being pushed onto women is the constant presence of advertisements at malls of women with bags of their recent purchases and huge smiles on their faces. I wanted to be like them since they all seemed to be happy with their recent purchases and rid of the thing that was bothering them. When I was 16, I adopted this mentality that by buying things I didn’t need or just wanted would help with my stress and help me forget my burdens. I did forget about my troubles for a bit but then it just came back and learned that it didn’t work and stopped doing and instead faced my problems head on.

This type of mentality is dangerous for children especially girls as this causes them to think that they can solve everything by wasting a couple of bills to buy items that are advertised to make them happy. This also causes financial struggle in the future for either them or their family.
