Journal 15 Omar lecture and Shopping for Pleasure

The lecture was very interesting. The whole idea of comedy being a subversive genre is a very powerful idea. Comedy allows people to laugh and mock the problematic systems that we are in. it brings up the problem and and makes us recognize there is something wrong. The fact that we can laugh at it makes it a less hostile approach than if someone confronted someone else about the problem and started accusing them of doing something wrong. The jokes allow us to challenge the systems of oppression and make people realize the perspectives other people are coming from.

The article talks about consumerism and how it affects our lives. The consumerism culture makes commodities into something that define our identity. It provides a sense of freedom in what you want to get. Buying things at a mall helps you get products that define your character. You can choose who to buy from and what to buy. The article also tries to connect shopping to women. Under a patriarchy, the women are the consumers and the men are the producers. I think this is not how society works now. Everyone has their own opinions on what they want so everyone is a consumer. Buying commodities can give anyone a sense of freedom, not just women.
