The two short videos on neoliberalism
really expanded on how imperialism thrives through politics. These dominant
nations, such as the United States, oppress less developed countries and cover it
up with the excuse that it knows what is best for that country economically and
politically. When in reality, these countries are pinned under dictatorships
that are beneficial to these dominant nations, like the US. They exploit these
countries for economic use, and despite the term sounding progressive,
neo-liberalism is employed by conservative politicians to essentially invade and
dominate these countries that are not able to resist this indirect, and also
direct, control.
After
reading about Vietnam Idol, I got the impression that through this reality
television program Vietnamese people were forming an identity and developing
their own sense of recognition. There were also strong indications of
nationalistic pride, probably more than what American Idol offered this nation.
The observation about gender norms being reinforced when the women’s voices and
bodies are reserved to tradition. And although both genders are encouraged to
dress their best, the women are more often criticized and ridiculed about their
physical appearance. This gender role conflict seems like a never-ending theme
not just for Vietnam, but a lot of countries across the world. Although
Vietnamese people are establishing their own through this show, I cannot help
but notice several drawbacks that also result from it.
