Response: The Gendered Limits of Consumer Citizenship in Import Subcultures

Growing up around very masculine men, it became a shock to me once I was exposed to movies who had Asian/Asian American actors or leads. They were a different kind of masculine, a masculinity that was almost forced in my younger eyes. I was told by my friends that all Asian men looked the same and that they were girls. I believed them for a moment because that is how they were portrayed by society.
My beliefs now are different from what I used to think, I now know that they all don’t look the same and that there are more Asian ethnicities other than Chinese and that they are masculine. Depending on where you go in the world, the idea of masculinity is subjective and we shouldn’t apply our ideas to other cultures. The idea that all Asian men are feminine is now diminishing because of the rising popularity in Asian/Asian American entertainers.
