"The Art of Necessity" & "Shopping for Pleasure" & Omar's Presentation

It's interesting to learn about how the RTS group helped to revolutionize the way that protests were done. The incorporation of popular culture into the art of the protests is something that the RTS group helped to do that really changed the way that protests were influencing society around the community and around the world. The DIY protests helped to diminish the invisibility and helped to expose the creativity of artists and blossom the influence that they have on popular culture.

Consumerism in malls itself is something that is now widely accepted as normal for both genders. However, in the early days of malls and shopping, shopping in malls was considered a woman's thing. Fiske's argument that shopping in public was considered a form of retaliation against the cultural norm of women being hidden away at home all the time. Although this is a different perspective of what I have, I respect it because it is a different way of looking at the situation, I don't really agree completely because shopping is something that both genders do regularly and shouldn't be just directed at one person.

Omar's presentation on comedy as a way of cultural resistance is essentially present in the Asian American community. The hegemonic powers that is fought using these tactics is very important as it allows for the communities to cope with whatever they are fighting against, like racism. In the improv example that Omar used as an example, using a witty comedic comeback allows for the often oppressed group to rebel against them in a way that it doesn't compromise their integrity and status in the community.
