Journal 11

A01

In Laotain daughters, Shah talked about some experiences and traditions that second-generation Laotain’s experience by including some of her personal examples. Much of her topics cover Laotians culture and family experiences. Shah talked about valuing family and family relations as a big part of being Laotain, and getting together with extended family members. I can relate to this because even though my parents immigrated to America, all of my cousins, aunties , grandparents and other relatives moved to America as well. I always look forward to the big family and relative gatherings every few months because it kept our relations close to each other. I would also learn a lot about my parent’s culture from their native land, and it is always a very joyful and learning experience while I spoke and listened to everyone in Cantonese. It is truly a atmosphere that is very special to me. I think these gatherings are very important for me to keep a close ethnic tie that provides me a happy and comfortable medium with being “American” and “Chinese”.
