In the reading by Long Bui about
Globalization and the Public Cartographies of Vietnam Idols, the author discusses
the cross-cultural role of Vietnam Idol. As seen in other countries, this
reality show competition grasps the eyes and ears of many devoted followers
throughout the nation. This brings about the idea of cultural authenticity.
While some may claim that this was merely copied or taken from the culture of the
founded nations, there are unique traits that could argue for Vietnam’s
authenticity in the show. Since Vietnam is in a very different state as these
other first world nations, there is a great deal of cultural influence. Many
resources are received or influenced by these more powerful nations, from
economic views to physical goods. Even with the aid of foreign nations, Vietnam
continues to struggle with its conditions. While the nation attempts to produce
transnational media, there are a great deal of hindrances that occur. To a
degree this could be taken as an indirect form of imperialism. There is
underlining power that western nations hold over the representation of media.
Vietnam seems to have a desire to westernize their nation, almost holding the
idea that these conditions are the ideal state. However, there are negative
consequences due to the state of the nations. Due to lack of wealth, little
people will be able to access these shows causing little progress for major
costs. Overall, there seems to be a conflicting view of cultural power and what
can be accepted as popular culture.
