Aoki Response

When the documentary we watched discussed the activists plea to have an Asian American Studies class add to the curriculum, it was very reminiscent of the controversy today of whether or not American high schools and middle schools should add any form of ethnic studies into their class database. This brings my own experience at a low income public school in the Bay Area, and how a very large quantity of students who attended my high school were of Filipinx (and generally non European) descent. Looking back at what classes we were allowed to take and which classes even existed, it was evident to me that there was almost nothing for most minority groups. Of that classes that were offered , African American Lit and Puente, we're both taught by a White teacher. It should be a priority for school districts to implement more ethnic studies classes into their schools so that minority students can learn more about their cultural background without having to go out of their way to look for information on their history.
