Aoki and Deporting Cambodian Refugees

Aoki Film:
Aoki grew up in a neighborhood full of gangs and he was surrounded in what people consider as "ghetto" areas. Despite his background, he breaks the social norms surrounding his environment by fighting for Asian American rights against authority. For example, he was a active speaker who fought for the UC Berkeley protest. He gives strength to the Asian American community to show resistance against structural oppression.

Deporting Cambodian Refugees:
The article talked about the deportation of Cambodian refugees as a result of changes in immigration laws. Refugees generally have a bad stigma around them because they are often thought to be “terrorists” and “leechers”. The article shows the aggression and cruelty that many refugees went through including imprisonment and detention. I think people often alienate refugees because they are seen as neither part of their native country nor part of the country they moved to. The article also reminded me about Trump’s enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws to arrest and deport those in the country illegally, regardless of whether they have committed serious crimes. It concerns me that things are not getting better for refugees and immigrants, and that the same issues are getting repeated.
