Aioki Film and Deporting Cambodian Refugee

Aioki Film

Richard Aioki was the protagonist in the film. He is a community activist for the Asian American society. His persistence was what stood out to me because he grew up in a ghetto community that is different from other cultures. He is the exact opposite of the societal norms for Asian community he is seen to be motivated and strive for change. He was able to speak in front of a community and persuade them to believe his words.

Deporting Cambodian Refugee

I thought that this article is a good representation of what we have been talking in class about youths not being given acknowledgement due to the fact that they are young. They are seen as “incomplete adults” or “not quite citizens” and the stereotype is that they would not have sufficient knowledge to uphold justice when needed. This is very much false and as discussed in class, the society in the future is what youths make out of it, those who are interested in politics should not be shamed or being rejected. In the article the youth and refugees interconnected because both groups do not hold much power if any so they have little affect to state. Kwon follows and studies members of AYPAL which is an activist group who campaign for an end to deportations only by challenging higher power can you assert your dominance. I think the most heartbreaking thing about this article was the fact that Cambodian refugees had to be deported even after they finished serving their sentence, this makes me relate to an example of prisoners that are done with their sentence but is still not being able to be released and rather are being placed somewhere else to do more labor.
