Michelle Wang-"From Weapons Of the Weak" and "From Race Rebels" Blog

Scott’s work, “From Weapons Of The Weak” allows me to understand more about the actions of a collective group that rebels against supremacy and the dominant group. I was able to learn more about oppression behind the resistance and the sacrifices made in order for significant changes to occur. Scott provides with us that there are “everyday forms of resistance” “such gains, however, are uncertain, while the carnage, the repression, and the demoralization of defeat are all too certain and real” (89). It is important to know that resistance is due to a class struggle and even though resistance marks a significant historic moment, there is the sacrifice, repression, and defeat. A historic moment that captures resistance was the Sons of Liberty protected the American colonists' rights and fought for taxation imposed by the British government. Even though this historic moment empowered a mass group and individuals rebelled against the authorities, there were many sacrifices and the US colonists were suppressed and fought for the American Revolution that preceded.
Moreover, Kelley’s work “From Race Rebels” was interesting that resistance was experienced in many other communities “among black and Chicano youth working, and clowning, in a Los Angeles McDonald’s” (96). The youth workers were underpaid and overworked and “accepted consumption as just compensation” (97). In other words, the youth accepted the food as compensation and felt labor disputes were out of reach. The youth expressed their actions through continuing the job despite experiencing the hard working conditions.  Even though the resistance is historic movement, there continues to lack attention toward social justice in society and it is important for media to capture the true essence behind these social movements.

Question: What can society do to ensure that social justice and empowerment are promoted? How can the media focus capture the essence behind social movements?
