Journal 4: Resistance and Opposition

In James Scott’s work “From Weapons of the Weak” I began to understand that with every war we constantly learn from them. Although we may simply rise and against the current government and put in a new ruling person instead of a new system, over time we will come to understand that it is the system at fault and not the person who is ruling over it. Therefore, the sacrifices that are made in war are made for the learning and better understanding of what works and what does not work and thus is the significance of history. The technology and innovations today maybe better increase the lifestyle of how we live but ultimately it is the past that tells us how we should rule based on the data presented to us. For this reason we had the American revolution that implemented democracy and the government today. The ultimate showdown of ideals was during the Cold War between the ideals of communism and democracy which democracy had come out on top. Despite our association of resistance to people who’re considered the underdogs against a much powerful opponent, in the end both sides are fighting for different points of views, regardless of the difference in power. However another aspect to resistance instead of simply opposition is also containment. This is most prevalent when the United States and the USSR understood that who ever fired the first nukes would be the ones responsible for destroying the world as it would usher in World War III.
