The article talks about how
Daly City was a culture with many Filipino communities. Filipinos were thought
to be betraying the nation by going to America to make money for themselves and
not supporting the nation. However contributing to Philippine programs back in
the nation was seen as a home service. Their independence is seen by the cars
and homes that they possessed. Some showed a lot of material success. Most are
being employed in the service industry and are usually underpaid. I think my
mom goes through this same thing. She is not Filipino; she is Chinese. She
usually has to work the late night shifts at the hotel she works at and
sometimes even by herself. It seems really unfair to her because English isn't
even her first language so she will sometimes not immediately know how to help
a customer. And it doesn't help that her manager is always watching her to
catch her mistakes so they can fire her. It feels like there's some racism
going on. I know my mom is able to handle a lot, but the conditions she has to
go through seem unfair. The reading talked a lot about the Filipino community
differences in Daly City and its history. It showed some of the conflicts in
that culture, and it showed that there was that struggle in the community.
