Journal #2: Philosophy

Philosophy is a subject that interested me since my high school teacher brought it up in class a lot. I was intrigued by the fact that there were people in the world that questioned the way of life and got recognition. As I was growing up, I asked questions about the way things were and why, but my parents would always reply with “that’s just the way it is.” I was hurt that nobody tried to answer my question, but I learned that it was because they themselves didn’t know.          This article speaks about those that follow the order that was set out for them by society. They lack originality and are submissive to these views. As a child, these things are irrelevant as we have our own little world, but as we grow up we stop being curious and “grow up”. Isn’t growing up just another way of saying to shut up? We don’t ask simple questions that we don’t have an answer for out of fear of looking dumb, we stop trying to figure out the way things are, and we now speak the words that our parents have said to us hundreds of times, “that’s just the way it is”. The questions now is, should we go about our lives as complacent grownups and never know the answers to our questions, or start to ask why things are and rebel against those that tell us to shut up?

Question: Are philosophical views original or are they borrowed?
