James C. Scott
talks about how the weak and oppressed resist the authorities. He talks about
how there is a risk and cost for trying to challenge the authority in a big,
collective way. There is always the fear of getting put down and being punished.
So they participate in their own domination and take part in the hegemony. However,
they do other small, subtle forms of resistance by “foot dragging”, which is
like purposely using less effort in labor. They also use language and create
rumors and gossip to create a resistance against the power. These are small
forms of resistance that don’t directly challenge the authorities but show
resistance. This is part of the resistance aspect in Stuart Hall’s popular
culture concept. This reminds me of passive aggressive behavior because it is
indirectly addressing the problem and avoiding direct conflict. I feel being
under a power creates an environment where it is hard to challenge the higher
power directly, so indirect behavior helps to create the resistance that is
more tolerable.
