In "DJing as a FIlipino Thing" by Tiongson, the
author talks about the hip hop culture of young Filipino people and how
although hip-hop has a black origin and history, it has become part of Filipino
Culture. The author says this is not just Filipino people imitating black hip
hop, but that by applying their own lived experiences, Filipino DJs create
their own space in hip-hop culture that is different but no less authentic then
black hip hop. Throughout the article, the author debates whether or not the interracial
hip hop culture is appropriation, and if culture is not just passed down within
the one racial group that started it. I think Tiongson is arguing for the
expansion of what people think the boundaries of culture are, just as the
Filipino DJs he quotes do for the culture of hip hop. The author returns to the
idea that culture is constantly changing and is not fixed or limited to one
group or race. I think this really goes along the theme of the class the
culture is much more of a tool for change then is commonly thought, because culture
is also changing with each group and each lived experience.
Good job Victoria!
