This
short story accurately portrayed the relationship between Asian American
children and their immigrant parents. Like the narrator, many of us detest our
parents at a young age because we find their way of raising us as harsh
treatment compared to our American peers. Then, we slowly become distant as we
grow older and we do not learn to appreciate our parents until we are much
older and realize the significance of their journey and their actions towards
us. The narrator is seemingly awkward with his dad as they meet each other
after three years, but he slowly warms up to his father and learns to embrace
his father wholeheartedly. However, the narrator still tries to fit the mold of
an ideal child, hiding any traces of alcohol or cigarettes in his apartment. He
does not realize that the father does not care about those things; instead, the
father wants to spend time with his son as he slowly ages. The dynamic between
these two slowly improves as the narrator sees his father in a new light, which
warms my heart because it reminds me of the encounters between my father and me
when he was unsure about what to say on certain topics.
