Journal 16 - Love and Honour

Robert Zhu
A01

In love and honour and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice, Nam talks about the narrator's relation with his father. His father’s characteristic is very different from him, and the narrator seems to act a bit surprised by his father's responses. Through the conversations and the thought processes between the narrator and his father, we can see the differences between Westernized people and immigrants. This resonates with me because both my parents are immigrants, and they did not move to America until adulthood. My parents have a traditional background and would consider themselves to be knowledgeable of their culture, and their actions reflect that. Growing up, I find myself questioning and even belittling my parents when their views don’t agree with mines. I remember finding myself less in agreement to some of their statements because they mentioned it is from China. For example, my parents use eastern medicine and for some reason, I would view them as less effective and would go straight to the pharmacy instead because I had a mindset that eastern medicine does not go through the same trials and regulations as western medicine. As I am growing up, I have more respect for my parents and their cultural background. I used to think that their views were sometimes closed minded because they didn’t come in agreement with the western views, but it was me that was closed minded for only accepting western views.
